Great post and pics. Love the two girls in the Radio Flyer (I didn’t know they still made them) and others pics of the street fair. I still love mooching around Lauralhurst but my favs would be Hawthorne and Belmont.
I love how you get around and share the neighborhoods in PDX! I mostly hang out in Montavilla or along Division/Richmond but love my trips to St. Johns and Kenton and Humboldt...by bike or by bus!
Do you mean the new one in Gresham? That’s the East County Library. I have some real issues with that library because of the size of it. It is a horror for slow walkers to navigate. Fortunately, I’m in a power wheelchair and I can do it OK. I haven’t been in the Midland library for a couple of months, but I remember that it’s pretty nice.
Hey there Fran! Check out my neighborhood sometime - Liar Hill/S PDX. It’s cleaning and quiet and well within reach of downtown by foot or public transport
I went to the new Kernside street fair at Burnside and 28th yesterday and it was everything Parkrose was not: crowded, commercial, with overly loud, bad music and no gathering space like the green in Parkrose. I didn’t stick around.
Thank you, Fran, for this wonderful travelogue of local neighborhoods! I enjoy providing “bus therapy” on SE Hawthorne, 50th, and Foster 😁
I appreciate how my job allows me to get to know neighborhoods for 12 weeks at a time. Fortunately I now have days off that allow me to revisit shops or restaurants that seem interesting. Gone are the years of Mondays off when most eateries are closed.
This piece was a joy to read. I have driven through all these neighborhoods you have mentioned, some for years at a time.
Another thing that I enjoy about my job is the people I meet (although I am a fairly strong introvert), and then thinking a good thought for them as I travel through their territory. I feel that, possibly, I have spread some unasked for joy, acknowledgment, or good vibes ☀️
What a warm and welcoming post! I hear you about Mondays off. I used to suffer from that also. The Hawthorne route is still one of my favorites, and a good thing, as it’s the closest to where I live.
I’d hang out in Alameda if there were a business district. I think the nearest ones are on Fremont, at 21st and then up by 42nd; Otherwise, lots of steep streets and big houses.

A short hop for me but I didn’t hear about it in time to go. A
Have you been in the midland library. It is huge. It’s wonderful.

Hard to find novels. And most of what I look for on holds for months.

It’s a bit hilly and the bus service has been cut back. Got any good coffee shops there?
There’s Ross Island Grocery and Jola Cafe!
I’ve been to the Parkrose festival and I agree, it’s a step into a simpler time, somehow. I need to be more regular.
Thanks for your tour of the “hoods” you like to haunt.

What bus are you driving now?

I hope I can drive this route until I retire! Also, since this is your route, I will be thinking of you now 😉
Great neighborhood descriptions. My home for 40+ years sits on a block touching Alameda, Concordia and Sabin, all wonderful inner city Portland areas

How fun to get a tour of the neighborhoods of Portland! I've never been there.
