Your post makes me hungry for a good croissant. Hard to find now in Cork. Wonderful pics. I don’t know when I last saw a horseshoe over a door. I have to balance finding joy in the same things and moving through my life at a reasonable pace. So much delight everywhere!

"Surprised by joy" is such a familiar and wonderful feeling. I feel it is akin to what others might call "child-like wonder" but it's not just for children. Why are we expected to lose joy about the little things when we mature?

Thank you Fran, as always.

At Play in the Fields of the Lord.

I'm a little younger than you, 73. Last week I was working on a review of a new clinical study and it was SO interesting. Someone called, asked me how I was, the first thing that dropped out of my increasingly unfiltered brain was "I'm at play in the fields of the Lord". On good days, that's what I do feels like.

Also the title of one of a great book by Peter Mathieson. Who also wrote The Snow Leopard, which is not about snow leopards, it's about the journey to see a Snow Leopard, which he never does, but it doesn't matter. Kind of zenny.

I do love your posts. They kick me down the hill musing and thinking.

Muchas gracias,

Robin

This is delightful, Fran! And I love croissants...my poetry book is called Illicit Croissants At Dawn! And yes, with butter and jam, please. I love ensaimadas, too, the Spanish flaky doughnuts...also with jam. Everything tastes better with jam.

I want to be surprised by joy more often, the simple delights, the everyday wonders, as I head into the new year and you are the best person I know at that gift of noticing, Fran; thank you for all that you share with us. This I will take as very good advice: “Notice how the route you walk every day changes in texture and color and light. Pause, just for a moment—you have a moment, don’t you? And be aware. “

Forage for surprise?

Whimsy, wonder, serious stuff.

In Portland, beyond.

Wonderful post, Fran. And in the midst of some challenging stuff, I needed to hear your encouraging words about forgiveness and gratitude! And pointing out the many small discoveries simply by slowing down enough to really see. ❤️
