Thank you for looking at things the way you do. Insofar as the tune Waltham goes, I can well imagine that you know another text married to it: "Fling out the banner." There have been more random mentions of Longfellow's verse this year than I can ever recall, which is indicative of the times we live in. Mom was a fan of Longfellow. And, as my mother would said, Happy Christmas.
I don't like to correct you, because I hold you in such high esteem. Fling Out was in the Hymnal 1940, and is was FREQUENTLY sung as the recessional after Morning Prayer at St. Paul's, Oregon City. https://hymnary.org/hymn/HPEC1940/259b
Right now, I have the fourth edition of the Joy of Cooking, which Dad gave to his mother for Christmas in 1951. As a good librarian, he (or more likely Mom, also a librarian) pasted a headshot of Rombauer on the fly-leaf. Date Roll Candy and Snowballs are both there; fixtures of Christmas gatherings for all of my childhood. At some point I had a modernized edition of JoC that lacked many recipes (head cheese, which Dad made), but it had a perfect recipe for home made croutons. Nostalgia, best served sweet.
One more for today: I prepared Scandinavian Spiced Cocktail Nuts. Skål! With the somewhat large list of ingredients, and with different prep times, I put the recipe in Joy of Cooking style, which I have done with several recipes. Here is an example: Jamie's recipe was far too scanty on directions, but his ingredients were great. Rombauer provided the procedure (scooping out the onions).

No, I don't know "Fling out the banner." Not in the Episcopal hymnal. I do know "Fling Wide the Gates," by Stainer.

Right you are. I meant the 1980 Hymnal. I think I have a 1940, I just didn't check it.
I adapted a Joy of Cooking recipe for waffles made with sour cream to use yogurt. I sent it to Sunset and they published it and gave me $25.
It's great to hear from you!
Loved this post, especially your notes on creativity. Thank you!

The link is for baked onions, not nuts. Is that right? Recipe by Jamie Oliver.
